Gift Bags with Scalloped Edges and Bow – FREE SVG DXF EPS PNG PDF Cut File
Our FREE gift bag (or party bag) SVG enables you to make the perfect packaging for your presents. Gift bags can be quite expensive, especially when made from quality materials, and it’s so easy to make them on your cutting machine. Again your machine does all the hard work! All you need is a small amount of paper, glue and ribbon.
YOU WILL NEED:
- A3 sheet of cardstock
- Contrasting A3 sheet of cardstock, or two sheets of A4 (optional)
- 28cm ribbon
- Glue
- Our SVG

IMPORTING THE SVG:
- Once you’ve opened and unzipped the zip file, you’ll be able to choose the format of your choice. (We’re cutting on a Cricut Maker so we’re using an svg).
- Upload the file into your software (in our case, Design Space).
- Create a New Project, and click on ‘Insert Images’.
- Your screen will look something like this:
- When you click on any of the pieces, you’ll see that (as shown above) a bounding box surrounds the pieces. Click on ‘Ungroup’ (either from the menu in the right-hand margin, or right-click and choose from the drop-down) and it will disappear!
- If you’re only making one of the boxes, now you need to select the one you’re not making and delete it! We’ve deleted the smaller one for the purposes of these instructions. Click on the remaining pieces – you’ll see that a bounding box surrounds what’s left. If you look in the right-hand margin, you’ll see all of the elements of the pattern are highlighted.
- One at a time, click on the scissors icon next to the lines – you’ll see that the Layers Attribute pops up, and from it, select the stylus (or Score) icon. You’ll see that the lines on your pieces are converted to dashed lines, which shows that they will be scored.
- Now, click on the pieces and choose ‘Ungroup’ from the right hand margin (or right-click to select ‘Ungroup’ from the drop-down).
- You’ll now need to select the pink piece and all of the score lines associated with it. This is easy to do, as you’ll find them all in the same group in the right-hand margin. With your Shift key pressed, select the pink piece and all of the lines next to it. Click on ‘Attach’ (at the bottom of the margin (or again, right click to select it from the dropdown).
- At this point, you might find the green pieces disappear…but don’t panic! They’re just hiding (if you want to see them again, with the pink piece selected, click on ‘Arrange’ and then ‘Send to Back’). Do the same (shift, select, then Attach) with the larger of the green pieces, and the score line on top of it, UNLESS you are doing the version WITHOUT the contrasting pieces, at which point you can just delete the green pieces!
You’re now ready to start cutting! Click on ‘Make It!’
CUTTING THE FILE:
This file really couldn’t be easier to cut – all you have to do is make sure you have the stylus in. I was using a medium-weight cardstock, so I chose ‘Cardstock (for Intricate cuts)’ as my setting. This requires the fine-point blade. If you’re making the version with contrasting colour panels, this should come out first, followed by the pink pieces (though of course you can cut them in any colour you want!)
ASSEMBLING THE GIFT OR PARTY BAGS:
- Your pieces will look something like this:
- If you’re doing the version with the contrasting panels, apply a thin layer of glue to the back of the contrasting pieces and – lining then up at all the cut-out sections – attach them to the main piece as shown:
- When fully dry, fold over all of the score lines, and carefully apply a thin layer of glue to the longest of the flaps:
- Affix it to the reverse side of the front of the gift bag, as shown (we’ve secured it with a clip while it dries):
- Apply glue along the edge of one of the longer flaps at the bottom of the box:
- Press the other long flap on top of it:
- Now, apply glue to each of the remaining (smaller) flaps at the sides of the gift bag, and fold them over.
- At this stage, we find it helpful to stand the bag on its base (i.e. the one you’ve just created!) and put something heavy inside the bag, to press the base pieces together. (We found our bottle of PVA glue ideal for this!)
- Thread the ribbon through the two holes at the front of the bag as shown:
- Fold the flap down at the top of the bag, and thread each end of the ribbon through the two holes:
- Neaten the edges of the ribbon (we like to cut them at a diagonal!) and tie a pretty bow.
You’ve done it!
